Awesome aren't they, I say do it, it may cost money and time, but it's sooooooo satisfying once it's tuned in right, and I'm right here to help any time of day mate...
There are lots n lots of engines and mechanisms available to print and I would love to print some too when I get round to it...
The good thing about making model working engines with moving parts like these is that you can also use push in skate bearings for anything that rotates.
Like these ones, just make the hole the correct size for a tight push push and your away...

I made a spool holder that finally does exactly what I want, did it in different colours to make it more interesting, it expands with a funky cog-mech to grip the inside of the spool.
You can see how I use the bearings, I've used then on other stuff too, most handy things, and very satisfying once they're in a working part...
I just need an RC car spring to return the mech back when loosening, but it works without for now.
Here's the website I got this file from, it's very popular, and best of all, all files are free!!!
BTW, I'm Zerpico in the comments bit asking about the spring.

It's great fun, and if you can design your own stuff, even better!!!
I say go for it, but prepare for lots of fiddling to get things right, but when it's right, it's awesome...
