Are they EMP-protected? Otherwise they might fry when a solar flare causes problems.
But don't you need a HAM license to operate these radios?

I have considered prepping for a CME/EMP power outage, but not done anything yet.
btw if you manage to hear the astronauts communication be sure to record it in case they say something cool.

I'm thinking more of digging a very deep hole in the ground for when it comes.
Or places I could go to, but there aren't any, except for the sewer.
Maybe it won't be just electronics and communications that will be affected.

Yes but there are public channels which don`t need a ham license just one
you pay for that lasts 5 yrs with no test or no license at all if you use the
cheap bubble wrapped radios supermarkets sell.
The boafeng is illegal to use anyway because its power output is too high 
and you change use bigger antennas.
I just use on public channel coz nobody is gonna bother tracing a signal
that appears so randomly just to fine me for not having the right radio.
As far as i know you only get caught and in trouble if you mess with
official radio channels like gov ones or police and fire brigade ooh and
the snobby hams report you if your on their channels lol.

I remember in the 80's my grandma used to have a scanner to listen to the police and stuff.
She was always talking about it, how she could hear everything going on in the neighbourhood.
Probably forbidden nowadays.

Police forces and such have switched over to digital radios now so
all their transmissions are encrypted,you can still hear them but it is just
a mess of beeps and static.

Yes I know, it's called C2000 here. I know this from my mum who used to work for the police.
She worked administration for the criminal investigations department, filing cases and evidence.
Cases ranging from burglaries to murder, she must have seen a lot weird and nasty stuff.
