Not exactly as new as they pretend it to be. This species is over 700million years old, and not new to science. I remember watching a documentary on television long time ago about this type of fungus, mold, whatever it is. Interesting they now present it with this much attention, specially since the Chinese recently found that slimey substance on the Moon.
Did China discover something similar on the Moon? And are they now trying to beat China out of the world's greatest announcement in recent human history of life on the Moon, by being first to announce this organism and that it could possibly survive the space/Moon enviroment. So when China finally makes the big announcement, they can keep a high head and say: ah nice, but we knew that already, thank you for confirming our findings.
I'm actually not sure if this fungus could survive on the Moon, but seems plausible. I just find it all a bit suspicious they now suddenly make such a big thing over this 'blob'.

First video is interesting. Towards the end you can see the yellow mold eating a white fungus. It's as if you can see the white fungus react to the mold as if it knows what's coming and is trying to get out of the way. Maybe it's from the sun, as it dries it curls, but the surrounding fungus appears unaffected.
