Could use this to charge a large battery pack for free and run appliances off that. I wonder if you could combine a couple of these in series and get higher voltage.

Yea, it's a great trick, but only if you know what you are doing.
I would not try to copy it. Even though I might get it to work, cause it doesn't look very difficult.
