I doubt there actually was a problem, they just made it up, an issue like this so far into the process, hard to believe.
Possibly this was just a rehearsal to make sure it won't blow up on the big day, 20th april which is also Hitler's birthday.

It looked dodgy from the start as burning pieces were falling off as the rocket slowly climbed out of the cloud of dust and fire.:



This could be the reason why it went wrong. Pieces of dirt and debris getting blasted all over the place, possibly causing damage to the engines.:
